Essential patchouli oil from Pogostemon cablin in the mint family originates in Indonesia and is extracted by steam distillation of dried leaves. The plant is also native to Malaysia and India, where it is called puchaput. The name patchouli comes from the Tamil pachchaiilai and means green leaf.

Patchouli oil has a rich, musk-like, sweet and spicy scent. The young leaves are dried and fermented before steam distillation, and the oil develops its full scent and character over time.
