Essential frankincense oil is extracted by steam distillation from the resin of the Boswellia carterii tree (also known as olibanum). The word derives from the French word “franc,” meaning precious or genuine. Frankincense was, together with myrrh, one of the very first resins used as incense in human history. The tree originates in the Middle East and often grows in a fascinating, natural bonsai form in the arid landscape.
