Ylang Ylang is a large tree originating from Far Eastern countries, such as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Its yellow flowers are highly fragrant and have long, drooping petals. The essential oil produced from the tree is abundant and is therefore the most affordable, yet it is highly valued for its scent in the perfume and cosmetic industries and is now also used in the food industry.

Descriptions of the oil highlight both a stimulating and relaxing character. In aromatherapy, Ylang Ylang is appreciated for its floral scent and for aromatic routines focused on relaxation, stress, mood, and hair care. A bath with the oil or its use in massage oil can enhance the relaxation experience.

Ylang Ylang means "flower of flowers" in Malay and was traditionally considered an aphrodisiac and a relaxing scent. Therefore, the flowers from the tree were spread over the bridal bed in Indonesia. Muslim women used to burn the oil to scent their harems, the part of the palace reserved for women. In China, the scent was used to purify the robes of mandarin officials. Ylang Ylang essential oil has long been associated with perfume and relaxation.

High concentrations of Ylang Ylang can cause headaches or nausea.
