Essential wintergreen oil from Gaultheria fragrantissima originates from China and is extracted through steam distillation of the leaves. The oil is extracted from a creeping shrub that grows in coniferous forest areas.

The main chemical constituent of wintergreen oil is methyl salicylate, which is used in creams for external use and massage blends and is associated with soothing properties.

Wintergreen and birch are the only plants in the world that naturally contain methyl salicylate. As a flavoring agent, small amounts of wintergreen are used in candy, toothpaste, and chewing gum.

When used in aromatherapy, wintergreen oil spreads a sweet, minty, and refreshing scent that is associated with an uplifting and stimulating feeling.
