Spanish wild marjoram with a strong aroma and herbal character

Essential marjoram oil is steam-distilled from the plant Thymus mastichina, which has a hairy stem, oval leaves, and small whitish flowers in clusters. The whole plant emits a strong scent. The plant is actually a wild-growing thyme, but is known as Spanish wild marjoram. It belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family in Spain and is not the same as sweet or French marjoram. It is also not oregano, which is also called wild marjoram.

Spanish marjoram oil is often used in aromatherapy and blends well with lavender oil and bergamot oil to create a relaxing environment. When the herb is used in an oil burner or massage oil, it is said to be able to soothe the nerves and counteract feelings of loneliness and rejection. It is also said to aid digestion.

Spanish wild marjoram is said to have been used by herbal practitioners since ancient Greece. Ancient Greeks and Romans crowned bridal couples with garlands of marjoram as a symbol of love, honor, and happiness. Marjoram tea with honey was used by singers to preserve their voice.
