Neroli oil is produced from the flowers of the bitter orange, Citrus aurantium var. amara, also known as Neroli bigarade, and smells similar to bergamot. The flowers are picked by hand and the oil is produced by water distillation because the flowers are too delicate for steam distillation. This is one of the most popular essential oils due to its wonderful scent.

Neroli essential oil is considered very soothing. The oil can be heated in an oil burner in a room for relaxation.

Neroli oil is believed to have been used by the Romans. In 1680, Anna Maria Orsini, the Princess of Nerola, used the essence from the bitter orange tree to perfume her gloves and her bath, creating a new trendy scent. From this time on, the essential oil became known as neroli after her. The oil is expensive to produce and great care is put into the work because the flowers must be picked just as they bloom.
