Frankincense essential oil is extracted through gentle steam distillation from the precious resin of the Boswellia carterii tree (belonging to the Burseraceae family) and is also historically known by the name Olibanum. The word originally stems from the Old French word "franc," meaning lush or abundant. Frankincense was, along with myrrh, the very first natural resin used as incense by humans. The tree originates from the Middle East and often grows in a fascinating, natural bonsai formation in the dry and barren landscape. Within the fragrance tradition, frankincense has for thousands of years symbolized divinity and purity.
