Frankincense oil, also known as olibanum, is extracted from the Boswellia carterii tree in the Burseraceae family and originates from Oman. The word frankincense comes from the French "franc," meaning precious or pure. Along with myrrh, this resin was one of the very first to be used as incense in human history. The tree is native to the Middle East and often grows in a beautiful, natural bonsai shape in the arid landscape.

Frankincense oil is highly valued in aromatherapy thanks to its deeply calming and harmonious scent. In this pre-diluted form, it is a fantastic and luxurious ingredient for daily facial care, where it is used to provide a wonderfully tightened feeling to the skin's surface, promote an even skin tone, and maintain the skin's natural elasticity.

Ancient Egyptians burned frankincense as a sacred incense and used it in their beauty masks. They also ground the burnt resin into a fine powder called kohl, which was used around the eyes – something that is clearly visible in historical Egyptian art. The earliest documented use was found in a 14th-century BC tomb inscription belonging to the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut. In historical contexts, the resin was traditionally burned to purify the air in rooms and drive away negative energies.
