Frankincense essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia carterii tree, of the Burseraceae family, and is also known as Olibanum. The word is derived from the French word "franc" meaning lush/abundant, and was, along with myrrh, the first resin to be used as incense. The tree is native to the Middle East and is said to exist in natural bonsai formation in the arid land. Frankincense is said to symbolize divinity.

This oil is one of the most prized in aromatherapy for its calming and meditative fragrance profile. It is traditionally used in cosmetic products and is especially popular for meditation and relaxation. Frankincense essential oil has long been used in aromatherapy and is valued for its balancing and harmonizing character.

Ancient Egyptians burned frankincense as sacred incense and used it as a face mask. They ground the burnt resin into a powder called kohl, which was used to accentuate the eyes. Kohl-rimmed eyes are often seen in Egyptian art. The earliest evidence of the use of frankincense was found in an inscription from the tomb of the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut in the 15th century BC. It was used to fumigate the sick and ward off evil spirits.
