Essential marjoram oil from Thymus Mastichina originates from Spain and is steam-distilled from leaves and flowering tops. The plant has a hairy stem, oval leaves, and small whitish flowers in clusters, and the entire plant emits a strong scent.

The plant is actually a wild-growing thyme but is known as Spanish wild marjoram. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family in Spain and is not the same as sweet or French marjoram. It is also not oregano, which is also called wild marjoram.

The oil is often used in aromatherapy and blends well with lavender oil and bergamot oil to create a relaxing environment. When used in an aroma lamp or massage oil, it is said to contribute to a calming sensation and is associated with managing loneliness and feelings of rejection. It is also associated with digestion.

Ancient Greeks and Romans crowned bridal couples with wreaths of marjoram to symbolize love, honor, and happiness. Marjoram tea with honey was used by singers to preserve their voice.
