Geranium essential oil is valued in aromatherapy and skincare for its balancing nature. It helps to balance oily and dry skin and is used in aromatherapy to create harmony and relieve stress. Its strong scent is said to keep mosquitoes at bay.

These geranium plants were believed to keep spirits away, just as they kept mosquitoes away, and were therefore planted around houses as hedges. The plants originate from South Africa, Réunion, Madagascar, Egypt, and Morocco and were introduced to European countries in the 17th century. Although there are about 700 varieties of the plant, only 10 produce essential oil in profitable quantities. The varieties planted in gardens usually produce too little oil to be used for extraction.
