Warm and smoky frankincense scent with a long tradition

Essential frankincense oil is steam-distilled from the resin of the Boswellia carterii tree, which belongs to the Burseraceae family, and is also known as olibanum. The word comes from the French word franc, meaning abundant or precious. Frankincense was, along with myrrh, the first resin to be used as incense. The tree originates in the Middle East and is said to grow in a natural bonsai shape in this arid landscape. Frankincense is said to symbolize divinity.

Frankincense oil is highly prized in aromatherapy for its calming nature. It is said to be useful in connection with wounds and scars. In cosmetic products, it is used for facial care, including for a toned feeling, wrinkles, and stretch marks.

Ancient Egyptians burned frankincense as sacred incense and used it as a face mask. They ground the burnt resin into a powder called kohl, which was used to accentuate the eyes. Kohl-painted eyes are often seen in Egyptian art. The earliest documented use of frankincense was found in a tomb inscription from the 15th century BC, belonging to the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut. It was used to disinfect the sick and drive away evil spirits.
