Essential tea tree oil from Melaleuca alternifolia originates from Australia and is extracted through steam distillation of leaves and twigs. The tree is native to the northeast coast of New South Wales.

In earlier times, the leaves of the tree were used to make tea, which gave rise to the name tea tree. The oil is said to have antiseptic and antifungal properties thanks to its terpenes and is found in many personal care and medicinal products.

Australian Aborigines have historically used crushed leaves for cuts, burns, wounds, and infections. They inhaled the oils from the leaves for coughs and colds, applied the oil to wounds, and used poultices. The leaves were also used as tea for sore throats. Between 1920 and 1930, essential tea tree oil began to become known and used in Europe for its antimicrobial properties.

Tea tree oil should not be taken internally. It is generally intended for use by adults only and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not use the oil if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
