The name ginger derives from a place called Gingi in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, and the Tamil word for ginger, inji-ver. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the unpeeled or dried, ground root of the plant. It is a warming oil that is appreciated in aromatherapy.

Ginger oil has many appreciated properties. Used in a vaporizer, this oil is appreciated for its warming and energizing character, and it is also traditionally used as an aphrodisiac.
