Elegant and floral scent of neroli

Neroli oil is produced from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, Citrus aurantium var. amara, also known as Neroli bigarade, and has a scent similar to bergamot. The flowers are picked by hand and the oil is produced through water distillation as the flowers are too delicate for steam distillation. This is one of the most popular essential oils due to its wonderful scent as well as its therapeutic properties.

The scent is reminiscent of bergamot and is one of the most appreciated in aromatherapy for its wonderful aroma and calming nature.

Neroli oil is believed to have been used by the Romans. In 1680, Anna Maria Orsini, Princess of Nerola, used the essence from the bitter orange tree to perfume her gloves and her bath, thereby creating a new modern scent. From this time on, the essential oil began to be called neroli after her. Folklore tells that orange blossoms were used to decorate bridal beds as part of romantic traditions. The oil is expensive to produce and great care is required since the flowers must be picked just as they bloom.
